NEW ORLEANS -- The Orleans Parish district attorney is commenting for the first time about that shocking video inside Orleans Parish Prison.

Leon Cannizzaro says he first saw the footage last week and there's no question crimes were committed in the video.

Cannizzaro says Sheriff Marlin Gusman is cooperating with the district attorney's office to investigate and to decide what action to take.

But Cannizzaro has a greater concern.

“If the judge finds the jail to be unconstitutional, not living up to certain minimal standards, then if the inmates decide to sue, to be released from the parish jail or to be put in another facility, that may cause some very serious problems with regard to public safety in the city of New Orleans.”

Cannizzaro adds he hopes the mayor and the sheriff can come together to work out their differences without having a federal judge intervene.
