NEW ORLEANS -- A rally was held Thursday to save the midnight Algiers ferry rides.
The “Take Our Money, Save our Ferry" was held near the Algiers ferry landing.
Supporters of the cause waved dollar bills in the air, demanding that Gov. Bobby Jindal put pedestrian fares on the Canal Street ferry.
One woman who owns a bed and breakfast in Algiers says if changes aren't made to the ferry schedule, it could drastically impact her business.
“If they close the ferry or we don’t have the proper times and they don’t let us pay a toll, this neighborhood will die. There will be no businesses. We have a bed and breakfast, and guests come knowing they can cross the river on the ferry,” said Hillary Moise, an Algiers business owner.
Supporters of the event say the pedestrian tolls would go towards restoring the late night hours on the ferries.
