NEW ORLEANS -- More than 2,000 people filled Champions Square at the Superdome on Sunday for the first ever King Cake Festival.
Twenty one companies competed to win the award for best king cake.
People voted by dropping doubloons in clear cylinders, and with a clear, sunny day, both bakeries and cake lovers indulged.
"We're making cakes year round as well as our Mardi Gras, so why else not to be here for this big event and enjoy the weather?” said Tonya Hughes of Haydel’s Bakery.
The idea for the festival came from two guys working in the administration department at Ochnser Hospital.
Originally from out of town, they were surprised there wasn't a festival dedicated to king cake. So, the hospital decided to host the festival.
The money raised goes to its neo-natal and pediatric wings, and the voters spoke -- the winner of the people's choice award goes to Haydel's, Randazzo's coming in a close second.
