NEW ORLEANS – The Gretna ferry is going to be operating on extended hours due to a boost in riders, according to Louisiana Department of Transportation and Development officials.
The new operating hours are Monday through Thursday, 6:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m.; Friday 6:30 a.m. to 11 p.m.; Saturday 12:30 p.m. to 11 p.m.; and Sunday 6:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Departures are scheduled from Gretna on the half-hour and from Canal Street on the hour. The ferry operates seven days a week.
In September the ferry moved from traveling between Gretna and Jackson Avenue to traveling between Gretna and Canal Street to try and spur interest for pedestrians. Since that change, officials say, 19,251 pedestrians have used the ferry – an average of 332 people per day.
