NEW ORLEANS – Mayor Mitch Landrieu and Congressman Cedric Richmond are two officials expected to be on hand for the groundbreaking for a new Walmart in the commercially starved New Orleans East.
The new store is being built at the site of the old Lakeland Medical Center at Bullard Avenue and the Interstate-10.
"As the world’s largest grocer, Walmart is uniquely positioned to make a difference for American families by making the food we sell healthier, more affordable and more accessible, and we plan to do just that here in New Orleans East,” said John Mims, Walmart market manager.
The new Walmart will replace an old one that never rebuilt after Hurricane Katrina. The groundbreaking ceremony is scheduled for 3 p.m.
