HAMMOND- Louisiana State Fire Marshals are investigating a fire that claimed the life of one man on Friday night.

State Fire Marshals say the fire happened just before 8:30 p.m. in the 500 block of Phoenix Square. Hammond firefighters arrived on the scene and found a home fully engulfed in flames.

Once firefighters extinguished the fire, the body of 74-year-old Nathaniel Kelly Sr. was found in a bedroom. Fire Marshals say Kelly lived alone.

Firefighters were able to determine that the fire started in a hallway near the center of the home.

State Fire Marshals are assisting the Hammond Fire Dept. with their investigation into the exact cause of the fire.

The Tangipahoa Parish Coroner’s Office will conduct an autopsy to determine Kelly’s exact cause of death.
