NEW ORLEANS -- Several businesses in Slidell had to be evacuated after a Hazmat crew responded to a major gas leak in the area.

The gas has been shut off, and according to officials, the public safety concern is over. No homes were evacuated.

It happened on Third Street near Pontchartrain Drive and Old Spanish Trail, according to the Slidell Police Department.

Workers were running fiber optic lines when the gas line was struck.
