METAIRIE, La. -- Hundreds got a jump start Wednesday night on the Independence Day celebrations at Lafreniere Park for the Uncle Sam Jam, which also put on an impressive fireworks show.

"It is such a patriotic day. It's such a fun day and it's a memorial day to celebrate," said Jerri Klein.

Many came to not only enjoy the food and music, but to remember the sacrifices others have made to protect that freedom.

"It's my way of honoring them and thankful for them that they stood up for something that means something," said She-ila Guilbeau who's daughter currently serves in the U.S. Army.

"We just have to be so proud of our country and our veterans and those over there now fighting for freedom," agreed Klein.

Michael Carous, a soldier in U.S. Army, knows that fight all to well. He said there is no better place he would rather be than home with his family.

"I feel fortunate that I am here celebrating it, but I have missed a few fourths myself," said Carous. "Remember we have fun here, but remember the people that gave us the right to freedom."
