LAPLACE, La. - Seven people were arrested, five of whom were in a car at the scene of the first of two shootings in St. John Parish Thursday that left two officers dead and two others injured, according to State Police Chief Mike Edmonson.
The chief again said the investigation is sprawling with two shooting locations, multiple weapons and dozens of casings from guns that were fired.
Deputies Brandon Nielsen and Jeremy Triche were shot and killed as they interviewed suspects that were believed to be involved in an earlier shooting at a parking lot that injured two other officers.
The injured officers - Michael Boyington and Jason Triche - were said by St. John Sheriff Mike Tregre to be doing "as good as can be expected." Triche said Boyington said to tell everyone that he would be back at work Monday.
Among those arrested were: Terry Smith, 44, of LaPlace, on charges of being a principal to attempted first-degree murder; Brian Smith, 24, of LaPlace, on attempted first-degree murder; Derrick Smith, 22, on principal to attempted first-degree murder; and Kyle Joeckel, 28, on principal to first-degree murder charges; Chanel Skains, 37, on charges of being an accessory after the fact; and Teniecha Bright, 21, on charges of being a principal to attempted first-degree murder; and Britney Keith, 23, with accessory to attempted first-degree murder.
Those charges involve the initial shooting of officers in the parking lot. Those officers were injured, but not killed. Charges involving the killing of the two officers at the trailer park have not yet been made.
Joeckel and Brian Smith are in the hospital, according to Edmonson, who said they would go directly to jail upon release.
