NEW ORLEANS -- The New Orleans Inspector General filed an ethics complaint against an accountant who serves dual roles as the independent auditor of the Orleans Parish Sheriff's Office as well as Sheriff Marlin Gusman's campaign treasurer.
The complaint was filed against Albert Richard III.
Richard is a Metairie certified public accountant who testified one day earlier in the Orleans Parish Prison consent decree hearings in federal court.
The inspector general called the sheriff's 2012 audit "tarnished" because of Richard's conflict of interest.
In a response, Sheriff Gusman said, “Mr. Richard is an accomplished CPA who has provided the sheriff's office independent review and analysis for a number of years. The inspector general was way off base. These are ridiculous and baseless accusations that, in any event and by law, are supposed to remain confidential until the ethics body acts."
