NEW ORLEANS -- The French Market Corporation is the subject of a scathing new report by the New Orleans inspector general, who slammed the city agency for mismanaging tens of thousands of taxpayer dollars.
The Office of Inspector General report cites thousands of hours of unauthorized overtime paid to French Market employees--extra pay that exceeded the agency's overtime budget by nearly $75,000.
The report also found that the agency donated public money to clubs and festivals in violation of the state constitution.
The unauthorized donations totaled nearly $65,000, according to Inspector General Ed Quatrevaux.
"This is indefensible behavior,” he said. “They've just got to get with the Constitution. This is New Orleans most underperforming asset."
The report covers a two-year period from 2010 to 2011.
In its official response, the French Market said it had corrected the problems.
