MARRERO, La. – Jefferson Parish investigators arrested four people and two more are wanted in connection with stealing thousands of dollars in roofing shingles and then returning them at a Home Depot and a Lowe’s for cash, according to the Jefferson Parish Sheriff’s Office.

Over $56,000 in shingles and roofing material were stolen during the spree, according to the JPSO.

“During this investigation, it was determined that Ronnie Deville and Nicholas Champagne had been storing roofing shingles at a friend’s residence in Marrero,” Col. John Fortunato, spokesman for the JPSO, said. “According to a witness, both individuals have been stealing roofing shingles from job sites throughout the West Bank of Jefferson Parish and have been returning them to Home Depot and Lowes for a refund. It was uncertain how the suspects became aware of shipments of roof shingles being delivered to various job sites.”

Fortunato said the suspects would go to the job locations and take the shingles from the job sites. Deputy Scott Curanes recovered 10 boxes of shingles from a home in Marrero.

As the investigation widened, it was determined that boxes of shingles were missing from other job sites.

Deputies determined that the thefts were committed by Nicholas Champagne, Destinee Grabert, Chelsea Autin and Ronnie DeVille.

In addition to the department, Home Depot had apparently been conducting its own investigation into the activities of the four mentioned above and had been monitoring and recording their transactions.

A detective that went to Lowe’s in Marrero determined a similar pattern of activity.

Autin and Deville admitted to stealing shingles under questioning by detectives. They admitted to committing the crimes to feed their heroin addictions, Fortunato said. They also named Gary Matherne, Nicholas Champagne, Dylan Guidry and Destinee Grabert as co-conspirators in the thefts.

Autin and Deville were arrested, and Guidry and Matherne were also arrested. Champagne and Grabert are wanted by the sheriff’s office.
