JEFFERSON, La. -- A Jefferson Parish deputy is behind bars after allegedly stealing items from the sheriff's office.

George Hernandez, 54, had been a member of the sheriff's office since March 1997. He was assigned to the property and evidence section.

JPSO spokesman Col. John Fortunato said an investigation was launched after receiving a tip on Hernandez's involvement in a "systematic theft" of JPSO property.

JPSO property crime detectives executed search warrants and recovered "numerous items" belonging to the evidence room. They are still being identified, and the types of items recovered haven't been released.

Fortunato said Hernandez under questioning admitted to stealing the items from the JPSO.

Hernandez was booked with felony systematic theft. He has since been fired.

The investigation remains ongoing. If you know any other illegal activity involving Hernandez, the JPSO urges you to call Lt. Al Cantrell at 504-364-5300 or Crimestoppers.
