Voters in parts of Metairie and north Kenner will head to the polls Saturday to elect a new state representative, to replace Tony Ligi in House District 79.

Four candidates, all Republicans, are running in the special election, the only race on the metro New Orleans ballot on Saturday.

Likely because it is the only race to consider, Secretary of State Tom Schedler’s office predicts as low as 15% turnout for the election, based on early voting numbers.

Ligi resigned from the District 79 seat to take a position with the Jefferson Business Council.

Running to replace him are: Allison Bent Bowler, chief financial officer for Benjamin Franklin High School in New Orleans; business owner Jack Rizzuto; certified public accountant Julie Stokes; and lawyer Paul Villalobos.

Rizzuto and Stokes have sparked the most heat in the campaign, with direct mail pieces hitting voters’ mailboxes nearly every day the past week, each questioning the other candidates' record and qualifications.

This is the first election in the state in which polling place hours will change from the traditional 6 a.m. until 8 p.m. time to the new hours of 7 a.m. until 8 p.m.  The state legislature enacted the change last year.  It will be the standard for all future elections, the Secretary of State's office said.

Eyewitness News will have election results beginning at 8 p.m. Saturday on WWLTV.com and at 10 p.m. on Channel 4.
