NEW ORLEANS - Comedian Jerry Seinfeld will headline a week of events this fall marking the grand reopening of the Saenger Theatre, theater managers announced Thursday.

Seinfeld will appear in two performances at the renovated Canal Street theater on Sept. 28.  Tickets for the shows will go on sale next Friday, June 21, the theater said.

Also, a grand opening gala, featuring singer/actress Kristin Chenoweth and the Louisiana Philharmonic Orchestra, will be held on Oct. 15.

Broadway shows return to the theater in October with the Tony Award-winning "The Book of Mormon."

But managers of the theater, as well as city officials leading the renovation, have said that the theater will also become a showcase for live entertainment and music acts, such as those featured in the lineup announced Thursday.

Other musical acts announced for the first few months of the Saenger's new season include New Orleans native Wynton Marsalis, who will perform with his Lincoln Center Jazz Orchestra on Oct. 13.  Public radio favorite Garrison Keillor will bring his "A Prairie Home Companion" show to the theater the day before, on Oct. 12, in a stage production presented by NPR affiliate WWNO.

Other performers announced for shows during the theater's first few months include Men of Soul with Jeffrey Osborne, Peabo Bryson, Freddie Jackson and Howard Hewett (Sept. 29), D.L. Hughley and Eddie Griffin (Oct. 4), Brian Regan (Oct. 10), Bill Maher (Nov. 16) and The Irish Tenors, with a Christmas show on Dec. 3.  Bonnie Raitt is scheduled to perform Dec. 6.

The theater, first opened in 1927, has undergone more than $52 million in renovations, spanning eight years since Hurricane Katrina flooded the lower portions of the building.
