BATON ROUGE, La. -- House lawmakers overwhelmingly approved a bill that would make tossing a cigarette butt on the ground or out of a car window illegal.

Violators would be hit with a $250 fine and eight hours of community service for their first offense.

Under the proposal, repeat offenders would face even stiffer penalties.

While state law already penalizes litterers, the current definition of "litter" does not include cigarettes or cigarette butts.

The bill now heads to the Senate for approval.
