METAIRIE, La -- A 13-year-old boy being transported in a hospital van was killed by a tow truck when he jumped out of the stopped vehicle and attempted to run across I-10 around midday Tuesday, according to State Police.
The victim, identified as 13-year-old Jeremiah Williams of LaPlace, La.,was hit near the Causeway exit.
State Police Trooper Melissa Matey said the van was taking Williams to the Southeast Louisiana Hospital and was traveling east on I-10 when an altercation took place inside the vehicle. Matey said the van was pulled to the side of the road and the driver called emergency services to help with Williams when he was able to get out of the van and cross five lanes of traffic to the concrete median.
When Williams reached the median, he then tried to cross I-1o east back toward the right shoulder when he was hit by a tow truck.
Williams was taken to the LSU Trauma Center where he was pronounced dead.
