WALKER, La. -- Police arrested a man on a charge of manslaughter in connection with the death of his four-month-old daughter, according to Walker Police.

Franklin Finney, 23, was arrested Wednesday, three weeks after his daughter was found unresponsive in her crib.  On Apr. 19, medical personnel and police were called to a home on Ball Park Road.

“After resuscitation efforts were unsuccessful, the child was transported by ambulance to a local hospital where she was admitted in critical condition and placed on life support,” said Capt. John Sharp, and medical personnel tried to determine what caused the child's respiratory failure.

After three weeks, the child showed a lack of brain activity, her condition worsened, and she was taken off life support. On May 13, the child died.

“Walker Police Detectives interviewed Mr. Finney Wednesday afternoon concerning the circumstances of the April 19th medical emergency and subsequent hospitalization of his infant daughter,” said Sharp.

“Mr. Finney initially denied any action that could have caused harm to the infant. However, following additional questioning, Mr. Finney told Detectives that while attempting to put the baby down for a nap, he became frustrated at his inability to console the crying child. Mr. Finney then admitted to placing his hand over the baby’s mouth to stop her from crying. Mr. Finney stated that he did not realize the child was no longer breathing until Ms. Depoy entered the room and saw that the baby was unresponsive.”

Finney remains in custody with bond set at $75,000. The matter remains under investigation.
