NEW ORLEANS -- New Orleans police have arrested a cab driver suspected of raping and kidnapping and fare he picked up in the French Quarter.
Pervez Iqbal, 60, was arrested Tuesday and booked with second-degree kidnapping. He has not been charged with rape, although police said those charges may be forthcoming as they continue the investigation.
Investigators said the 25-year-old victim left Jax Brewery on Decatur Street around 1:30 Saturday morning. Her friends hailed the cab and asked the driver to take her home. Police said the victim lost consciousness inside the cab and later woke up inside Iqbal's Metairie apartment as he sexually assaulted her. Jefferson Parish officials confirm the apartment is in the 3400 block of Edenborn.
Police said Iqbal later dropped the woman off at her residence in New Orleans.
Police said the victim identified the suspect through a line up, with help from photographs provided by the city's taxi cab bureau.
NOPD spokesman Officer Garry Flot said Iqbal is employed by American Cab Company. They said he has been in New Orleans for about one year, and has been in the United States for about three years. He is originally from Pakistan.
