NEW ORLEANS -- New Orleans police have arrested a suspect who allegedly shot a man on Canal Street just minutes after a Carnival parade passed by Friday night.

The shooting happened near the intersection of Canal Street and University Place around 8:45 p.m., according to NOPD Assistant Superintendent Marlon Defillo.

“We believe two individuals, one 17 and one 16 year old were involved in an argument at which point they apparently walked into the middle of the street where the 16 year old produced a semi automatic pistol and fired at least one gunshot, striking the 17 year in the left calf,” said Defillo.

Witnesses tell Eyewitness News larger than normal crowds were close to the scene in light of the fact the Krewe of Oshun parade rolled just about three minutes prior.  Defillo estimates it was more like ten minutes after the parade passed before shots were fired.  The parade route includes a stretch of Canal Street about 30 yards away from the scene of the shooting.

Harold Adinryan, who was working inside a convenient store adjacent to where the shooting took place says immediately after the two gun shots were heard, a crowd of about two hundred people could be seen frantically rushing down Canal Street.

"People were running like crazy, trying to save their life.”

“There were dozens of police officers within proximity of where the shooting occurred, heard the gun shot, responded, and reacted and arrested the 16 year old approximately a block and a half away from when the shooting occurred.” Defillo adds the arrest was made just moments after the shooting.

The arrested suspect was in possession of a small caliber handgun, according to Defillo. As for the victim, he was rushed away in an ambulance to a nearby hospital where is said to be in good condition.

"People were running like crazy" ................................... Like a thundering herd of Wildebeasts across the Serenghetti Plains. In the words of Frank Davis " Now-That's naturally New Awlins"

Here we go again. Another shooting on a parade route.

Why should this surprise anybody, there have shootings in broad daylight every MLK day, this happened at night, it's been going on for years. if James Perry or Troy Henry were to be elected does anyone in their right mind think things will change? Both promise the world and have no clue how to slow down, much less stop it regardless what they say or claim.

People getting hysterical. It is a city of 400,000 people. 1 million others in town. ONE kid in argument with another kid is wounded (not killed). It wasn't random, it wasn't a robbery. 1.4 million other people didn't get shot. Its sad but this is happening in every city (and small town) in America. relax. This is why most of you live in the burbs. Which, BTW, aren;t even that much safer. JP has seen murder rates rise 3 years in a row, while NOLA's per capita rate dropped 2 years in row (murder are up by 2 last year, but population grew 20% so the rate dropped). JP now has almost half the murder rate of NOLA. People, I've been going to Mardi gras parades, 30 or more a year, for years. I dont know anyone who has been hurt or even watched someone else get hurt. RELAX!

I wonder if the young people who attempt to kill someone because of a disagreement are ever examined by mental health services. Only a mentally deficient person goes around with a gun, looking for someone to kill. To view human life in such a cavalier fashion indicates a serious drop in intellectual ability. Uptownray has hit it on the head. With the huge numbers of people attending the parades and walking around during Mardi Gras there are very few incidents of violence. He said that he has been to many parades over many years and never saw anything like this shooting. Perhaps if some of those people who fled the city, back in the 1960s, returned to claim the metropolitan area, some of the crime would diminish. God help us on Saturday if we elect the wrong mayor.

Yet another reason I don't take my kids to parades in New Orleans. Jungle bunnies ruling the roost down there, that's for sure. They've certainly done a nice job with New Orleans, huh?

The next mayor will solve this issue...hahahahahahahahahaa!!!!!

Thank you Huey Long and LBJ for making this crime possible with your misguided social polices.

Oh, how I wished the police would have shot and killed this kid....it'd be one less thug to worry about....when I was 16 years old, I didn't even know how to load a gun, much less point one at someone and pull the trigger. The leaders of the black community had better step up and stop this violence. The leaders continually turn their heads. Let's also blame the parents, yes the mom and the somewhere dad....they keep bringing kids into this world that they have no intentions of ever molding into a productive citizen. The mom gets her free money until the kid turns 18 anyway..I say that after a woman has 2 children all help ceases....if not, they keep producing kids that they can't support physically or mentally.....let's start there.....

the sad part is this thug will be released from jail and do it again and again until someon takes him out. then his family will be an tv saying he was a good boy and didnt deserve it. PLEASE mitch, help this city!

Idea, TEAR DOWN THE IBERVILLE!

bookerabear said on February 6, 2010 at 12:41 PM

I believe these boys should have their baggy pants pulled down and publically spanked. No canes like they use overseas. Spanked and humilliated. We can't impose hard punishment Shame them. These kiddies are protected by the ACLU and other civil rights groups. And they JUST want to show that "I'm the man." Well, take them down a notch. Spank 'em and sit them down on Canal St. for all to prod. Every mother who sees her child dead in the street claims he was a 'good boy' just straightening out his life. Then the next day they publish a rap sheet of all the mischief and crime the 'good kid' participated in. At that point they should publish a picture of the 'good kid's' Mama with the rap sheet. . - Again - EMBARRASS THEM WITH THE TRUTH.

Uptownray, you are 100% absolutely right!!! Been here my whole life, work downtown, walk the streets of uptown and downtown and I've never been shot or hurt. This is a great city. Just because you are near an area where young thugs get stupid, doesn't mean they are targetting you. Here, it's mostly black on black crime having to do with drugs. New Orleans is a safe and fun place to be.

donaldmaddog said on February 6, 2010 at 5:13 PM

I taught in a public high school in New York for 30 years. Most of my students were fine kids, but some were not the brightest bulbs on the marquee. A 16 year-old is not likely to think, period! A 16 year-old with a gun is another animal entirely. Thinking it is cool to kill someone is a sure sign of a diminished intelligence. Education is a cure for ignorance. There is no cure for stupidity.

I was at Mardi Gras 2009 and it was a blast!!!!! Never once did I feel threatned, scared, a target, etc. I couldn't agree with you more Saintsgirl1971! New Orleans is a GREAT and very unique city! I LOVE New Orleans--period!

FIRST, psychohurricane is right.......TEAR DOWN IBERVILLE PROJECT. SECOND, MAKE SURE YOU DON'T ELECT A JUVENILE JUDGE WHO HAS "i will work with nord, i will work with the schools, i will make sure basketball courts are open" as there ONLY platform. DO YOU REALIZE THAT AFTER THE POLICE ARRESTS AND THE DA PROSECUTES THAT THE JUDGE WILL LET THESES KIDS GO? THEY WILL PROTECT THEIR NAME, THEY WILL MAKE THE 17 YEAR OLD SPEND A YEAR ON A BASKETBALL COURT AND LET HIM GO. HE WILL SHOOT SOMEONE IN A CAR JACKING, GO TO TRIAL, BE CONVICTED AND THE JUDGE WILL SUSPEND HIS SENTENCE. THEN HE WILL KILL SOMEONE, GO TO JAIL AND THE PAROLE BOARD WILL CUT HIM LOOSE. ..........THE JUDGES AND PAROLE BOARDS DO NOT HOLD CRIMINALS JUVENILE OR ADULT ACCOUNTABLE, WHICH IS WHY ALL THESE THUGS HAVE PAGES OF ARRESTS AND CONVICTIONS......... We need to STOP being satisfied with the revolving door!!!!!!!!!!!!

nightplumber67 said on February 7, 2010 at 10:04 AM

The crowd should have rushed the gunman and beat and kicked his a** until the police arrived. This should happen everytime someone commits a crime around large groups of people. If we all get together and beat these criminals to an inch of their life and it gets reported on the news then maybe they'll think twice before committing the offense. But it has to be a crowd, everyone punching and kicking as if we are tired and won't stand for it anymore. It has to be so many people that the police won't be able to jail.

joafhf said on February 7, 2010 at 10:59 AM

i am so tired of this behavior if the juvenile justice system would start being tough with these kids and parents things would change check their school records they probably have been a problem in school too hold parents responsible for their children and provide serious help and support for parents with kids that are a problem this is not just affecting no it affects the entire state
