LAFITTE, La. -- The Jefferson Parish Sheriff's Office is investigating a fatal accident in Lafitte Sunday.

According to police, around 10:00 p.m., the driver of a 2001 Ford Explorer, identified at 54-year-old Delin Joseph Ortego, was driving at a high rate of speed, when he failed to manage a curve in the 4500 block of Jean Lafitte Boulevard.

The Explorer drove off of the road, struck a metal guardrail, and then a utility pole, breaking the pole in half. The vehicle came to a stop on it's passenger side and the driver had to be extricated.

Ortego was not wearing a seat belt at the time of the crash, and he was pronounced dead at the scene.

A witness provided police with information that Ortego consumed alcohol at a party prior to the accident.

The crash remains under investigation.
