NEW ORLEANS -- An Assumption Parish man has pleaded guilty to driving over and killing 49 seagulls in an Elmwood parking lot in September.

Jackoby D. Bertot, 29, will have to pay $1,210 in fines and will be placed on one year of inactive probation.

Bertot sped through a flock of resting seagulls in the Home Depot in the Elmwood shopping center on Sept. 2.

Louisiana Wildlife and Fisheries agents.were able to identify the Labadieville resident through a series of interviews and surveillance videos.

The seagull killings violated the Migratory Bird Treaty Act, which carries a sentence of up to six months in prison and $15,000 in fines.
