THIBODAUX — A 55-year-old Mississippi man died today from injuries he sustained in a crash on U.S. 90 near Raceland.

State Police said Anibal Alvarez, of Pascagoula, Miss., was driving his 2000 Ford Focus westbound when he crossed the median and hit a 2004 Dodge Dakota driven by 62-year-old Eddie Bergeron of Houma. The crash happened around 10:53 a.m. on Monday morning.

Alvarez was taken to St. Anne Hospital in Raceland and then University Hospital in New Orleans, where he was pronounced dead this morning.

Bergeron suffered minor injuries and was taken to Terrebonne General Medical Center in Houma.

Both drivers wore seatbelts, police said.

Police are unsure why Alvarez crossed the median. They do not suspect alcohol or drugs played a role in the crash.
