NEW ORLEANS -- A teenager is in police custody after a SWAT roll Saturday morning in New Orleans East ended with one person shot, according to NOPD Superintendent Ronal Serpas.

The incident began before 10:30 a.m. in the 8000 block of Downman Road at the Picture Me Rollin hair salon. The SWAT roll was called off about an hour later.

Serpas said 19-year-old Pershing Willie Gilmore walked into the salon when there were about 15 people in the building, including an undercover NOPD officer.

Witnesses claimed Gilmore was acting peculiar, with his hands in his pockets, Serpas said, and he eventually pulled a gun out and began threatening himself.

Eight people, including the officer, were able to get out the building, but at least five had to hide in a bathroom area, Serpas said.

Police set up a perimeter and call out a SWAT team once they arrived on the scene.

Several shots were fired at one point, striking one of the barbers in the leg. It's unclear when during the incident the barber was shot. He is expected to survive.

Police haven't released any information on the motive behind the shooting.
