NEW ORLEANS -- The FBI is investigating a lethal shooting involving one of its special agents in New Orleans East.

The FBI is not saying much about the shooting, only saying it involved a special agent while performing his official duties.

NOPD officers, federal agents and state police rushed to the Motel 6 in New Orleans East after an officer in distress call went out on the local police radios.

We are told an FBI agent shot a man, about 30 years old, at the hotel shortly after 2 p.m. Tuesday and that the man died on the scene.

The FBI says the agent was part of a task force that was conducting surveillance of drug-related activity.

The Orleans Parish Coroner’s Office showed up shortly after 5 p.m.

One civilian was also taken from the scene in an ambulance with minor injuries.

The FBI is not releasing many details about the shooting, but we can say this was part of a joint federal and local task force. An autopsy will be performed in the morning to confirm the official cause of death.

Hotel guests were not allowed to return to their rooms until just before 5 p.m.

The investigation is now being led by the FBI and backed up by Louisiana State Police.

The man who was shot hasn't been identified.
