NEW ORLEANS -- Police have retrieved a body from the Lake Pontchartrain, according to the New Orleans Police Department.
Officials have not confirmed if it is the body of Kswany Chavez who went missing while swimming near where officials removed the body, but a friend, William Membreno, who was on the scene said it was Chavez's body that was pulled from the lake.
According to NOPD spokesman Officer Frank Robertson, around 10:30 a.m., a person spotted the body of an unidentified man floating in the lake. Police were called to the scene, and "Members of the NOFD search and rescue squad removed the body from the lake."
The Orleans Parish Coroner's Office will conduct an autopsy to determine the exact cause of death, said Robertson.
Earlier, police said that dive teams were not going out into Lake Pontchartrain to look for missing swimmer, 21-year-old Chavez. NOPD said the weather conditions were not favorable and the water was too rough.
Chavez went missing Tuesday after when he was swimming with friends near UNO. Chavez went under the water but never resurfaced.
