NEW ORLEANS -- From defending his own version of the city budget to trying to discredit the city's Inspector General's Office, New Orleans Mayor Ray Nagin gave those in the metro area a lot to talk about on Thursday. But it's what he said about the upcoming mayor's race that's now leaving some wondering.

After eight years in office, Nagin is no stranger to controversy. His latest words to raise eyebrows hit the airwaves on Thursday -- some say he tried to inject race into politics when talking about the upcoming mayoral election on the urban talk radio station WBOK.

"I think that if we're not careful we can get a candidate that really can do some damage to the community to all of New Orleans for a long time to come," Nagin said during the interview. "You could have a major shift in political power not only in the mayor's seat, but at the council. We've already seen it at the DA. I'm hearing rumors about the Sheriff's Office."

"He seems to be speaking in code, in racial code, in this interview and if he's race baiting, he's really doing damage to this city," said Dr. Ed Chervenak, University of New Orleans political scientist. "African Americans make up the majority of voters in the city, and black officials have been running the city since they became a majority, and so he's appealing to the fear that a white official might be elected."

Not true, Nagin said.

"I just think having the number of candidates that are in the race is going to split the vote whether you're talking black, white, Hispanic or whatever," said Nagin. "We as a community need to consolidate around one candidate."

Dr. Vera Triplett said she agrees with the mayor.  As president of the Gentilly Civic Improvement Association, she represents hundreds of residents of all races, ages and incomes. She said the mayor's words make sense so long as they have nothing to do with race.

"I don't think we have the luxury of looking at things that are just trivial and divisive. I think that we have to, if we're going to survive, focus on the things that really matter," said Triplett. "That's competence, that's skill set and that's a proven record."

The mayor now promises to hire political pollster Dr. Silas Lee to get a sense of the support behind each of the mayoral candidates.  Nagin then said he'll decide who to throw his support behind.

"I don't think any of the candidates are going to be seeking an endorsement from Ray Nagin," said Chervenak.  "I realistically think they'll be playing the anti-Nagin card. They're going to all point to the fact that they are not him."

Qualifying in the mayor's race officially begins and ends next week.  The election is set for Feb. 6.

Hire Silas Lee to do polls? You friggin idiot. You don't have any money in the coffers! Or don't you remember that? I guess not. You must be putting all that on the city Amex, knowing the next mayor (hopefully one that works) will be paying.

An endorsement from Ray-Ray would be the kiss of death to your campaign! If they were smart they would all avoid him.

raiddrank said on December 4, 2009 at 7:23 AM

who ,running for mayor, would want that baldheaded fools recomendation? if anything that would be the kiss of death. this jerk just doesn't realize just how loathed he really is.

Now let's not act like this is the first time Chocolate Ray has played the race card! Unfortunately, he isn't the only one either. Elections in New Orleans have always been around race and not a persons ability and integrity. Thus the reason New Orleans is broke, pathetic education system, crime ridden with thugs and the laughing stock of the state and country! Can anyone say William Jefferson or Eddie Jordan or Marc Morial!....lol

Same old from nagin. He's a racist. Been for a long time.

rhettswife said on December 4, 2009 at 8:59 AM

For once and for all, let the politicians and the posters here and elsewhere keep racism out of the picture. This city is in a state of decay because of incompetent leadership, not because of the ancestsry of the leader in question, Mr. Nagin. Let's unite as citizens once and for all and put this issue to rest and teach our children and our children's children the worth of all people TURN OUR ATTENTION TO THE PEOPLE WHO ARE QUALIFYING AND BE CAREFUL IN OUR SELECTION AND BASE IT ON THEIR ABILITY TO BRING THIS CITY UP FROM THE MORASS OF DECAY CREATED BY THE LACK OF PROPER LEADERSHIP FOR FIFTY YEARS OR MORE AND THE STORM CALLED KATRINA.

rhettswife - I agree 100%. But if nagin wants to talk about race, WHO has been leading NO for the past 8 years that was suppose to be quaified and was to unite the people and help the people of Katrina? nagin is a racist and has proved it time and time again. In reality, nagin does not want a white person in the mayors place of authority. Common sense tells one that if a majority of people are black that a black person should know what is best for them and still help those of a different color, culture, background, etc. But when greed gets involved I don't care what color, culture, background, etc. you are, you will let all the people down. We need leaders that are honest, citizen centered, has self -respect, self-worth, and not prideful and self-centered. Not afraid to listen to worthwhile suggestions and change if necessary. The leadere needs to be busy about getting the job done instead of concentrating on keeping the job.

Sorry WWLTV, but this seems way too slanted. Given Mayor Nagin's track record of controversial racial comments and the sudden buzz word of racism (even though polls suggest NO residents could care less about racism), I can see why you slanted this story this way, but seriously, where is the evidence to substantiate this current claim? Sounds more to me he's warning about "good ole' boy" politics coming back (even though he's already use to that). The way he mentions the takeover of the mayor's office, city council, DA, and police, it sounds a lot like a return to one group of people who are all friends reaping the rewards of having who they want in office, where, and when all at the expense of the voters. Honestly, I'm no Ray Nagin supporter, but he has a point in this regard, and I'd hope the city would heed this warning. We really need to PAY ATTENTION during this upcoming Mayoral Race and use solid research and knowledge to make the right choice. We can't be bought by smooth talkers

A Nagin endorsement = "the kiss of death".

catsyd2 said on December 4, 2009 at 10:35 AM

There is no bigger racist in the City of New Orleans than Clarence R. Nagin. He might think his veiled comments fool the citizens but we are a whole lot smarter than he thinks. Most of the people who voted Nagin in for the second term were people housed outside of New Orleans and bussed in. I would guess that many of them have not returned to endure his divisive ways and silly talk -- not to mention all the damage his has done to our City. The biggest favor he do everyone is keep his mouth shut until the times at last comes for him to step down as Mayor

geno722 said on December 4, 2009 at 10:53 AM

Ley me get this straight: Nagin is concerned that his replacement might do damage to the city? LOL isn't strong enough to describe how hard I'm laughing. He was the mayor before Katrina, so he can't blame the storm for all of the city's problems. Fair to note that New Orleans wasn't a particularly well-run city before Nagin or before Katrina. New Orleanians should not care what color or ancestry the next mayor is, they should care about getting crime, schools, and the city's streets and infrastructure under control. He's as slick as motor oil as far as whether or not his comments can be construed as racial in nature, but the mere notion that anybody should even care what he thinks about the next city administration is laughable.

robatltono said on December 4, 2009 at 12:28 PM

WWL this is weak and lack luster reporting. Most New Orleaniams (black and whiite) could care less about any comments from Nagin! This anti-Nagin negativity is hurting your standing in this community. You have lost most of your african american viewers Don't lose your white viewers too over C.Ray Nagin! It would be nice if you undertake a major expose on the "before/after rebuilding efforts of by citizens - neighborhood by neighborhood. Many are still rebuilding and any positives, pitfalls and/or negatives would be invaluable information to viewers of WWL Please stop trying to make a "dollar out 15 cents" reporting

This idiots brain must seep through the top of his head and he shaves a piece of it away each time he waxes that mellon. The election can't come soon enough!

vanillagorilla said on December 4, 2009 at 3:06 PM

I used to think Marc Morial was pathetic,,,well he was,,,just not this pathetic. Nagins foot to mouth disease seems to be more of just his natural being. He's a pathetic leader. I don't care if he were white, pink, brown, or yellow, he stinks, and he's another embarrassment to this city and the people. God forbid he throws his support behind anybody running for mayor, they will be doomed. And lastly, it seems that when certain people fail miserably, they jump to play the race card, and how many times has hizzoner done this? Enough already!
