NEW ORLEANS -- With the family home in foreclosure, former Mayor Ray Nagin's wife has filed for bankruptcy in Texas.
Court records confirm Seletha Nagin this week filed for chapter 7 protection from 14 creditors, including the IRS and a lender who holds the note on the family home in Frisco, Texas.
As WWL-TV first reported last month, the home was scheduled for a foreclosure sale Tuesday. But Seletha Nagin filed for bankruptcy on Monday. The Collin County clerk's online records for foreclosure sales set for Tuesday no longer include the Nagin townhome on Grosseto Street in the Bella Casa subdivision.
The bankruptcy petition states that Nagin owes between $100,000 and $500,000 to the listed creditors. The foreclosure notice from one creditor, Everbank of Jacksonville, Fla., stated that its debt is $157,000.
Nagin is scheduled to be sentenced on federal corruption charges next month. The federal government is seeking to collect more than $500,000 from the former mayor, the amount it says he illicitly gained from his crimes.
