NEW ORLEANS -- A 35-year-old deputy with the Orleans Parish Sheriff's Office is dead after an accident on the interstate Sunday morning.
Deputy Brunell A. Magee died in the hospital after the accident, which happened at about 6:25 p.m. on I-10 West near Irish Bayou.
“We regret this tragic loss of one of our own,” said Orleans Parish Sheriff Marlin Gusman. “Our thoughts and prayers are with Deputy Magee’s fiancée and the entire Magee family. On behalf of the Sheriff’s Office, I also want to express our concern for the other driver in this incident. We hope he makes a full recovery.”
Magee, who was assigned to the McDaniels Work Transitional Center, joined the sheriff's office in 2010.
According to NOPD spokesman Officer Garry Flot, Magee was driving on I-10 when he lost control of his vehicle for unknown reasons. The vehicle crossed the median and hit a car driven by a 61-year-old man.
The 61-year-old man is stable. Doctors pronounced Magee dead at the hospital.
Police haven't identified either driver.
A toxicology test is pending, and an autopsy will be conducted to determine the exact cause of death.
