New Orleans chefs make list of James Beard food awards

NEW ORLEANS -- Some of the city's top chefs, including a local restaurant icon, top the list of nominees released Monday for the James Beard awards, considered the top honor in the food world. The nominees were announced at a special ceremony at the Palace Café.

Scott Boswell of Stella! and John Harris of Lilette are nominated in the regional category for best chef in the south.
 
Previous Beard award nominee Sue Zemanick of Gautreau’s is a repeat nominee in the rising star chef of the year award category.
 
Two New Orleans superstar chefs are nominated for their cookbooks: John Besh, for his well-received My New Orleans cookbook, and Donald Link for Real Cajun, written with Paula Disbrowe.
 
Also, of the six new inductees this year to the James Beard Foundation "Who’s Who of Food & Beverage in America" list, four are from Louisiana: chef Leah Chase, of Dooky Chase restaurant; Jessica B. Harris, author/historian and folklore scholar at Dillard University; Paul C. P. McIlhenny, president and CEO, McIlhenny Co. (makers of Tabasco); and Susan Spicer, chef/owner of Bayona.
 
Awards will be presented in May at ceremonies in New York.
