NEW ORLEANS - The Audubon Zoo was closed for about an hour Friday when a monkey became loose, according to a zoo spokesperson.
The zoo had been open for 15 minutes when an 11-year-old African Colobus monkey, weighing 33 pounds, escaped from its cage.
Eyewitness Jennifer Wester Clark reported that she and others were being ushered to the cafe area while zoo staff captured the monkey.
The monkey was found not far from his enclosure.
The monkey is OK, according to the zoo.
By 11:10 a.m., the visitors were able to walk freely, but the primate area was roped off, according to Clark.
"We'll determine what happened and we'll correct whatever needs to be corrected. We appreciate our staff, our security staff, our guest services staff, our vets, our keepers, our first responders for handling our situation appropriately and for taking the right procedures in our emergency action plan to make sure the situation was resolved," said Chimen Grant of the Audubon Zoo.
The zoo reopened around 11:15 a.m.
