NEW ORLEANS -- An Orleans Parish Prison inmate died from cardiac arrest after "an altercation" with another inmate in the temporary housing tents Saturday evening.

The deceased man has been identified as Willie Lee, 40.

The fight happened at about 10:22 p.m., according to a sheriff's office spokesman. Deputies broke up the fight and transported Lee, who they said had no signs of injury, to another tent facility.

Lee collapsed about 10 minutes later while complaining about having trouble breathing. The medical staff pronounced him dead just after 12:15 a.m. Sunday.

“We are saddened when we lose an inmate in our care and our thoughts and prayers go out to the family,” Sheriff Marlin N. Gusman said. “Although it is infrequent, the death of an inmate is an unfortunate reality that all jails face, and one we continuously strive to prevent.”
