AVONDALE, La. -- Officials are investigating a freight train derailment near Avondale ship yard on the West Bank.

It happened around 3:00 a.m., on River Road near Garden Road in Westwego.

Officials say the train jumped the tracks but it is uncertain how many cars may have jumped the track, but they are blocking River Road.

There is no word yet on any possible injuries or what exactly was in the freight cars, but Jefferson Parish Fire Department says it has not been called out to the scene, which means the scene is not hazardous.

River Road is now open in the area.

WWL-TV has a crew on the scene and will bring you more information as soon as it is available.
