GULFPORT, Miss. -- Gulfport police have arrested a Louisiana man who they allege stole a Greyhound bus, but was quickly overtaken by two passengers and held for police.

Police tell The Sun Herald that 28-year-old John Wesley Ray Thomas, of Franklinton, La., was supposed to get off the bus, which came from New Orleans, at Slidell, but he continued riding to Gulfport. When the bus stopped at Gulfport Friday, the driver stepped off briefly and Thomas allegedly jumped behind the wheel and began to drive away with the 28 passengers.

Police says two of the riders stopped the bus and detained Thomas until officers showed up at the bus station to arrest him. Thomas was charged with motor vehicle theft.

It wasn't immediately clear if Thomas has an attorney.
