A Houma pastor killed himself Wednesday after hitting a 7-year-old with his car, according to police.
Robert McGuire, 53, was driving near 224 Hellier St. in Houma when he hit the boy, who was riding a motor scooter, and left the scene, Houma Police said.
McGuire was the pastor of Houma's Genesis Baptist Church, Jones Funeral Home confirmed.
Police said the boy, who they are not identifying, was knocked unconscious but woke up when officers arrived. The child was treated at Terrebonne General Medical Center for bruises and a concussion but is recovering well.
Police said they found McGuire's gold Chrysler 300 at a house on Triple Court. Officers tried to enter the house and were eventually let in by McGuire's wife. McGuire was found dead from an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound, police said.
The wreck and shooting remain under investigation, police said.
A family member who answered the phone at McGuire's house declined to comment.
McGuire celebrated his fifth year at the church in July.
The funeral home said services for McGuire would not be held until sometime next week.
