MARRERO, La. – The American dream is now more attainable for some in Jefferson parish's Lincolnshire subdivision.
On Wednesday, local leaders gathered to celebrate the latest development by Peoples Community on the west bank.
First responders, teachers, and government employees will now have the opportunity to become homeowners through the program.
For example, Leatrice Hollins, the executive director of the Peoples Community group, says a $128,000 single-family home will be offered for as low as $58,000 to a qualified purchaser.
Houses like that one cater to families who could not otherwise qualify for or pay for a mortgage.
"We need to have affordable housing, work force housing, and also quality housing for not just low income but also middle income families,” Hollins said.
Many of the homes were built on former storm-damaged properties acquired by the Louisiana Recovery Authority.
Eligibility depends on employment status as well as a credit score.
