NEW ORLEANS -- Not only can you not legally text and drive, but soon accessing social media sites behind the wheel could be off limits, too.

The Louisiana State Senate’s Transportation, Highways & Public Works Committee approved a measure that would make accessing, reading or posting to social media sites illegal while driving.

State Sen. Dale Erdy, R-Livingston, proposed the move after getting feedback from local law enforcement.

“They're trying to skirt the law by using that avenue of Facebook or Instagram or something of that nature to get out of texting prohibition, so here we are just trying to close that loop,” Erdy said.

Violators would face a $75 fine for the first offense and a $500 fine for the second.
