RACELAND, La. – Bayou communities down in Lafourche also took on water from Tuesday’s heavy rains, especially Raceland, one of the hardest hit areas in the parish.
And one of the hardest hit neighborhoods in Raceland is in the Alidore subdivision. There’s been up to 5 feet of water in front of some homes.
Lafourche Parish deputies had to go from door to door by boat, picking up neighbors on Williams Street and Triple Oaks Drive. They picked a wheel-chair bound man and a pregnant woman.
Parish officials say up to 6 inches of rain fell in just a few hours Tuesday morning. They say the pumps were operating, but the heavy rain just overwhelmed the drainage system. Some neighbors said they had 4 to 5 feet of water in their home.
As the rain eased up in the afternoon, people assessed the damage. Some called it devasting.
“The water came up fast, fast through here.,” said Rodney Gray, a Raceland resident. “The water just kept pushing. The levee can’t do much with the pumps on. It just turns it around and around, backing the water back up.”
“They had to come get me out, otherwise I would have had to stay the night. I don’t think the water could have gotten in. My trailer is five feet off the ground. So, it wouldn’t have gotten in the house,” said Lawrence Davis, a Raceland resident.
There is still quite a bit of rain on some of the local roads, including Highway 307 near Kraemer. The Sheriff’s Department was forced to close that highway because of standing water.
The parish also reports high water in parts of Thibodaux, Choctaw and Bayou Blue.
