New Orleans, La. -- The Rex Organization on Saturday handed out hundreds of thousands of dollars in grants to support public education in New Orleans.
With more than 90 percent of students in New Orleans now attending public charter schools, the grants are expected to have a huge impact.
The organization best known for its Fat Tuesday procession says this is the third straight year that its education grants have totaled more than $500,000.
Since 2007, Rex's foundation has donated more than $2.4 million through its Pro Bono Publico Foundation, established after Hurricane Katrina. The foundation borrows its name from the Rex motto - "for the public good."
