NEW ORLEANS -- New Orleans police sent a SWAT team to a home Saturday in Central City where a 56-year-old woman barricaded herself inside her home with a steak knife and a gun that turned out to be a toy.

The incident happened in the 2900 block of Dryades Street.

The woman's 23-year-old daughter and 5- and 6-year-old grandchildren were inside. She released them through a back door just after 1 p.m.

The woman eventually surrendered at about 2 p.m. and was taken to a hospital for a psychiatric evaluation. Police say she is known to be mentally disabled.

Police haven't identified the woman.
