NEW ORLEANS – In a city that doesn’t need an excuse for a parade, tens of thousands of people jammed downtown streets to greet the World Champion New Orleans Saints on one of the traditional idle days of Mardi Gras parading.

Traffic was slowed to a crawl and there were reports of cars sitting for hours waiting to get a glimpse of the city’s first Super Bowl champion in 44 years.

Saints players were treated like royalty and it’s doubtful that any of the parades over this weekend would garner the enthusiasm of people who turned out in nearly 30-degree weather.

“Everyone here tonight can’t touch this,” said an exuberant coach Sean Payton, who blew kisses to the crowd, before telling them they all had a role in the team’s success.

The parade was put on with a historic level of cooperation between Mardi Gras krewes, each of whom donated a signature float from their respective parades.

"How's the 'Who Dat' nation feel tonight?" Super Bowl MVP Drew Brees yelled when his float stopped at the reviewing stand. "This toast goes out to you. We love you and we won that championship for you."

Brees was visibly excited and danced at Gallier Hall, and an untold number of versions of the team’s unofficial anthem, “Get Crunk” were blared over speaker systems or played by marching bands, including the Marine Corps band who broke with their traditional rigid form to play like a New Orleans brass band.

Plans to close streets just before parade time were scuttled when the route soon became jammed with parade goers. Reports of traffic included 2,000 people waiting for a ferry to cross from the city’s west bank to the east bank – that trip came with an estimated three-hour wait.

Others reported crawling in traffic similar to the slowdowns experienced during hurricane evacuations. Even though most schools let out around half day, many people had trouble traversing the city’s streets.

On a high since winning the NFC Championship Game that sent the Saints to the Super Bowl, the parade is a culmination of fan fervor. However, with Mardi Gras parades beginning in earnest Wednesday and with several Saints players scheduled to ride in the traditional parades, the celebration is expected to continue for at least a week.

In what can be described as “Only in New Orleans,” the Marine Corps band revved the crowd up with a rendition of “Get Crunk.”
“I think it’s what we’ve been through with Katrina. That brought us together on a bad note and finally there’s something to bring us together on a positive note,” said Plaquemines Parish President Billy Nungesser.

The level of support from the divergent parishes and cities has been evident as the entire region has rallied around the miraculous season.

"This is Endymion. This is Orpheus all wrapped into one," said Jerry Romig, the Saints announcer at the Superdome for 41 years. "Fantastic. What a day. What a week. What a year."

You interviewed more people that we didn't care about seeing, and didn't show much of the parade.

No wonder you cut away to NCIS, no HD for local broadcast. Very 3rd rate ownership.

swamprat said on February 9, 2010 at 8:15 PM

The only coverage worse than 4's was channel 6

WHO DAT!!! Go Saints!! Go New Orleans!!!!Good Job Nagin! You put a disgraced politician (Vitter) on the podium to say a few words.

ispeeksasiplease said on February 9, 2010 at 8:18 PM

Well scott Satchfield finally shut up....when WWL left the air. WWL leaves the air to show that lame, lame, L A M E primetime lineup. Wonder which show the sponsors would rather them show. But guess what?? WDSU is still showing it, LIVE!!

ispeeksasiplease said on February 9, 2010 at 8:22 PM

Well I left a comment about WWL bailing for "not ready for prime time" programming and WDSU still airing the parade, and they cut it!!

brutus2 said on February 9, 2010 at 8:25 PM

Does anyone know if Jeremy Shockey is there? If not, why?

daniki22 said on February 9, 2010 at 8:26 PM

How could you shut down 1/2 way through the parade??? HISTORY IN THE MAKING and you only stick around for 1/2 of it!!! What an insult! You had some of the best camera locations-good picture- little rough on the operation but still better than the other stations! Besides the trouble with the music interfering with hearing the toast y'all were doing alright. Why stop??? I love NCIS but if Fox can push back American Idol- you could so blow off NCIS! Come on now... let's get it together!

macarpen said on February 9, 2010 at 9:31 PM

To those complaining about the horrible views, bad video shots, the cutting out to air NCIS, etc.: If you wanted a better view, you should have been there on the parade route yourself. I did not go (didn't get off work in time) so every little bit that WWL showed was greatly appreciated. Let's not complain when things are so positive. Between the numerous stations airing it, I saw some good footage, combined (I had one station on one TV in my home, another station on another TV and WWL on my main TV). I was impressed by it all. WAY TO GO SAINTS!!!! This is the WHO DAT WORLD!!!!!

I waited for 2 hours to board one running ferry on the Algiers side to try to get to Canal Street. I got to the landing around 5 and left around 7:30 and barely got into the terminal area before leaving (the parade was already on Canal Street by the ferry. Why was there only one ferry running when the city knew that huge crowds would be using it to access Canal Street? Another question would be why was the parade route so short? I mean, usually most parade routes in the city start at Napolean Ave and go to the Convention center. This would have given more people access to view the parade. Did we really need marching bands in THIS parade? If not, the floats could have traveled a longer route or at least take the same route as Baccahus or Endyminon......I'm so angry at the start time of the parade and the length of the parade. It was a once in a lifetime event and New Orleans planning cut it very short.......

I am so disappointed in wwl for cutting off the most important and historic event for the rgeion. What a slap in the face to this area. Wdsu covered the entire parade and wvue covered until 8. I am utterly shocked by what you have decided to do. Anything to make a buck huh. SO next time you decide to run your stations commercial pumping your rating be sure to ad that as long as wwl doesn't lose money we care about new orleans. Losers

Shame on ya WWL for cuttin' away !! Time for me to check out your competitors. You aren 't the only game in town.

God Bless the Saints for their spectacular season. This year Mardi Gras came a week early. This parade will be the GREATEST parade this Mardi Gras season. Now it is time for N.O. to turn its attention to the BEST Carnival season EVER, made BETTER by the Saints Super Bowl win! GEAUX SAINTS! GEAUX Endymion, Bacchus, Rex, Zulu, Orpheus, and the rest of the Carnvial Krewes!

nolongeron4 said on February 9, 2010 at 11:19 PM

It will not be long before Channel 4 will have to change their promo of being # 1 in New Orleans. After your insult to the Saints, the city of New Orleans and those fans who could not go to the parade and instead had to watch it on TV by cutting out at 7 PM you can count on 6 and 8 being the station of choice going foward. Whoever made this decision should be fired immediatley and also Channel 4 should issue an apology to the Saints, the city and to the viewing public. Bet it doesn;t happen!

WELL I MISSED THE PARADE DUE TO THE IDIOTS AT THE ALGIERS FERRY. I WAS IN LINE FOR OVER A HOUR. AND PEOPLE IN FRONT OF US STARTED TURNING AROUND BECAUSE OF THE FIGHTS THAT WERE BREAKING OUT INSIDE THE FERRY HOUSE. HOW CAN A CITY WITH SO MUCH JOY ACT LIKE THAT. MY DAUGHTER WAS IN THE PARADE AND I DIDNT EVEN GET TO SEE IT.

heyyall said on February 9, 2010 at 11:31 PM

l'm soooooooooooo proud of those ,,saint ,,,,,,,congraulation from all of us,,,, that are fans, you people deserve it.,,l saw the parade on CNN it's were slaming,l was happy to see everyone all pump up.l hope the city official take this postive attitude and build on it , new orleans has a new oulook now. it future and expectation should be to beautify communities with landscaping ,while rebuilding home, more office building ,hotel, motel, park, and visitor center, the big easy should become the sightseeing tourist attraction city it once were. p.s make sure that the levees, withstand category 4 and 5 hurricanes. if not, it would make any sense to rebuild, just to be destroy over again. l think, that officials should have a storm plan, and a hurricane drill at least twice a year.with a sounding of a alarm. l also think that, every citizens should have a manual on how to, and what to do when an hurricane occur. God bless New Orleans.

To the New Orleans Saints congratulations & Thanks for finishing Strong Even though I could not be their because of a physical injury to my Back, I really enjoyed watching he Parade on the NFL / WWL coverage my only concern was why didn't Mrs. Hill's camera man not tell her about her Hair? Mrs. Hill has always been a true professional & I've seen her in person in Lake Side Mall & she was always a very pleasant & warm lady, But the flat was not Hers because she does not have eye's on top of Her Head, Then To the Fans since Katrina was seen by the entire world suchlike this parade all I felt was true appreciation that there was not any riots like they had after the Cowboys super bowl But New Orleanians gathering for a party without all the negative garbage, Thats the New Orleans that I'm proud to call home, WHO DAT say we don't know how to enjoy ourselves!!!!

sloppyjoe57 said on February 10, 2010 at 7:07 AM

ALGIERS FERRY - Why did they even have any police around the algiers ferry? They did not stop people (mobs) from cutting in line as we waited in line on the levee....they did not stop people from fighting inside the ferry house or keep people (hundreds) from smoking inside the ferry house either. I saw about 8 police standing around one police car looking at the crowd. They were useless and should have stayed home. I can't believe the city actually paid them to be there. After waiting over 2 hours, my family and I left the ferry and did not get to see the parade but I bet the ones that cut in front had a wonderful time......ugh.....

TOM BENSON AND THE ENTIRE SAINTS ORGANIZATION SHOULD GET THE NOBEL PEACE PRIZE FOR THE WAY THEY UNITED THE CITY AND LOUISIANA.

Sorry for the ones who had trouble getting across on the ferry and for the ones who are disgruntled with wwltv. This was the first time for an event of this nature in the city, and there were bound to be glitches. After all settles down, the memory of the Saints historic win will soften any irate feelings in connection with the victory parade. Just look at all the positive national publicity New Orleans is getting. Congratulations to the entire Saints team, and in particular to the courageous and clever coach Sean Payton who never seems to get rattled and always devises strategies that work for the benefit of the team. He is a true gem.

rhettswife said on February 10, 2010 at 8:35 AM

Peabus, dear, let's all pray that the unity displayed by the citizens of New Orleans will continue well into the future and that this city will rebuild and become what it once was and can still be, the Queen City of the South, our Nouvelle New Orleans. Only in unity will we be able to accomplish this.

Once again channel 4 TV coverage was of the politicians in the stands than the parade and we can look forward to their pitful Mardi Gras Day coverage of who gets the most coconuts, Dennis or Jim.

I am gald I was able to go to the parade. GEAUX SAINTS. However, I must say I was disapointed in the slooooww moving. People came in freezing weather and I felt all the stopping and gaps were a real let down. I also heard some players got off and got food! Come on they should have been prepared. They had all day!!!! WHO DAT - WE DAT. Thank you Saints for being such an uplift for our area.

Funny how many people working at WDSU are posting about WWL's coverage.

scutfargas said on February 10, 2010 at 1:30 PM

FOX 8 had the best coverage. It was incredible...and all in High Definition! I hate to say it, but they are really gaining ground on WWL. How can you not have HD newscast in 2010 when you are supposed to be the news leader?

squirrel26 said on February 10, 2010 at 4:02 PM

GO SAINTS! OK, so I had to watch at home due to some health issues, but I gotta say (and I say this as a long time WWL fan) that many of the comments about the WWL coverage are spot on. The music was drowning out half of the parade, the camera angles were bad and didn't give very good full views, you saw but didn't hear most of the bands that were quickly shown, Angela often had no idea what the cameras were showing as evident by her confused facial expressions (are they on me? are they on the parade? are they on the stage?), Dennis had technical issues, the cameras didn't focus well on the floats, and they mostly covered Gallier Hall and that hack of a Mayor. It was just awful. Eventually, I begrudgingly changed the channel and watched elsewhere. So disappointed in you guys. If some of the other stations were able to get it together, you could to. That said, I was delighted to be able to see the parade at all and am thankful to our black & gold BOYS!

ponchatoula51 said on February 10, 2010 at 4:58 PM

It just wasn't Channel 4 with bad coverage. Channel 6, 7, & 8 were all bad. They showed Drew Brees more than the other players. Drew Brees is great but he didn't win the Super Bowl by himself. It was a TEAM effort. Give the others credit too! Also, why isn't the Endymion and Bacchus letting ALL the Saints (players only) ride in these super parades. They can split up the team between the 2 parades. These floats are large enough that they can fit in a few men on each float.
