NEW ORLEANS - If you walk the busy halls of Warren Easton Charter High School, you’ll see a simple drawing that might surprise you.
A child’s hand-drawn picture, chosen by Sandra Bullock, is framed in the school's honorary hall of fame. It pays tribute to the important work the star has done in New Orleans' oldest public high school.
“We wouldn't be halfway to where we are right now without her," said principal Alexina Medley. "We would be struggling."
Bullock has donated over $500,000 to Warren Easton since 2006. She adopted the school after Hurricane Katrina pushed 10 feet of water inside the building.
Bullock’s first project with Warren Easton was renovating the auditorium. She helped fund the renovation and worked with school officials to create a vision for the final product.
Bullock also provided the final funding needed to open a school health clinic. And she helped pay for new band uniforms after the school lost its uniforms to Hurricane Katrina.
The star met with band members last semester.
“It really like, touched my heart. I'll never forget that, meeting her,” said junior Tassion Lott, who spoke highly of the encouraging words Bullock told the band.
And then there are the scholarships. Lauren LeDuff received the first one in 2007.
“She gave me a $1,000 scholarship towards my education at Southeastern, which was at the time a God send,” said LeDuff, now a teacher at Eisenhower Academy of Global Studies in Algiers.
Wednesday night, Bullock received national recognition for her work at Warren Easton, earning the first-ever People's Choice award for favorite humanitarian.
For LeDuff, seeing Bullock on stage brings back memories of her graduation.
“On behalf of our class I gave her a plaque and a sweatshirt so that was the last time I saw her on stage, so I'm thinking that I'll be reminiscing a little bit,” said LeDuff.
“Somebody has said that she's our guardian angel. I do believe that she is because without her help, we wouldn't be the school we are today,” said Medley
It's a school where children are taught that when you work hard and help each other, anything is possible.
