NEW ORLEANS -- Former Plaquemines Parish Sheriff Jiff Hingle gets to stay out of jail a little longer.
More than a year ago, Hingle admitted he accepted tens of thousands of dollars in bribe payments in exchange for a lucrative contract to rebuild the parish jail after Hurricane Katrina.
Wednesday, U.S. District Judge Sarah Vance continued his sentencing one more time to June 26, 2013.
He was supposed to find out his punishment on Jan. 9.
Prosecutors and defense attorneys requested that Hingle remain free at least another 180 days.
They say he is currently cooperating with the government on "multiple matters."
Hingle faces up to five years in prison after pleading guilty to a conspiracy charge.
