NEW ORLEANS -- State Police are investigating a serious accident Sunday that completely shut down a portion of I-310.
The accident happened just before 9 a.m. on I-310 northbound near the I-10 intersection.
Louisiana State Police Trooper Joe Piglia said he was "amazed" to find the occupants of the car were still alive after they were able to remove them.
Piglia said an 18-wheeler and a Ford Mustang were trying to take the I-310 northbound exit toward Baton Rouge when they hit each other while merging. The car ended up pinned against the barricade.
The female driver, who hasn't been identified, was airlifted to LSU Interim Medical Center and is in serious condition. The condition of the passenger, a 12-year-old boy, is unknown. The truck driver walked away with a few bruises and scratches.
The crash is under investigation, and charges are pending. Police don't believe alcohol was a factor.
