RIVER RIDGE, La -  A seven-year-old girl was killed when a stray bullet pierced the apartment walls and struck the girl in the neck, while she slept, according to police.

The Jefferson Parish Sheriff's Office is investigating an early morning shooting Sunday in River Ridge, which left 7-year-old Paige Dejean dead in her own home. It happened at an apartment complex along Jefferson Highway, near South Upland Avenue.

"This child was lying in the living room on an air mattress, with a cousin, and it wasn't until the child began crying, that alerted the mother and the other child," said Col. John Fortunato of the Jefferson Parish Sheriff's Office. "That's when she discovered her daughter had a gunshot wound in her neck."

Neighbors awakened to the sound of gunfire at around four o'clock Sunday morning.

"Pop, pop, pop! Bang, bang, bang! A bunch of screaming, a bunch of hollering," said Robert Hoffman, whose apartment is downstairs from the young girl's family.

Paramedics rushed the young girl to Ochsner Hospital, where she later died.

"The whole thing is totally ridiculous," Hoffman said. "It's sad. I mean, a seven-year-old, killed over something, like whatever was going on out here."

Several blocks away from the apartment complex, on South Upland Avenue, Jefferson Parish investigators scoured the area, looking for evidence of shots fired there.

"They be shooting back there sometimes," said Jonathan Canizleas, who lives in the apartment complex. "It's quiet during the day, but at night, I don't know."

Robyn Cross grew up in the neighborhood and heard the shots early Sunday morning. She said South Upland used to be a quiet, dead end street, until it was opened up to through traffic several years ago.

"It's been a lot of traffic up and down the street-- all time of day, all time of the night," Cross said. "So, I don't know if that's added to problems here. But since it's been down, there has been an increase in crime."

Crime that is beginning to wear down some residents.

"I'm tired of crime in New Orleans. I'm tired of crime in Jefferson," Hoffman said. "I wish, you know, something could be done about it."

"It's just horrific. It truly is," Cross said. "It is just a horrific crime."

The Jefferson Parish Sheriff's Office is withholding the identity of the young girl, until all of her family can be notified. So far, there are no suspects in this case. Investigators are asking anyone with information on this case to call Crimestoppers at (504) 822-1111.

I believe that anyone who knows who shot this little girl and keeps their mouth shut is just as guilty as the shooter. It takes an idiot to shoot in the direction of people in their homes, but it takes an uncaring coward to not turn the idiot in.

I am 37 years old and my parents have live on Upland St. my whole life. All of the families on Upland have been there for more than 25 years. None of them sell drugs. The last time there was a shooting on Upland was about four years ago and it came from what we call the back street. But even there gun fire is far and few between. There is alot of drug activity there. The police are doing a great job at keeping it to a minimum. As far as the shooter we are just as upset, so when we know the police will know.

this is so sad, my friend lives in those apartments right by the side of upland and luckily no bullets struck them. I wonder how cheap these apartments are made. Bullets shouldn't be able to penetrate 3/4" plywood from over a 100 yards away. they might be made of balsa wood.

Wow, i really don't even know what to say, about a place i once loved so much. I lived in that area long ago and it had been a quiet place to raise a family. My son and i, evacuated after Katrina and something in my heart, told me not to go back......and i'm glad that i did not. I live in a beautiful area of Texas between Fort Worth and Dallas and we love it here. I moved my mother here with us, because, it's like, New Orleans is losing it's way. I read the Times everyday and nothing but negativity on a daily basis, from the street crime to City hall politics, my home has become a joke. And to think that this child lost her life over something so foolish, is beyond me. I know that this type of thing happens everywhere............but this is my home and when i come to visit, i feel like a total stranger, i don't feel safe. My heart and soul goes out to this family, i know words cannot express what you all must be going thru. Just know that there is a God in Heaven and she is with him.

Did anyone else catch that the article mentions the child's name: Paige Dejean at the beginning, and at the very end it reads: "........ is withholding the identity of the young girl, until all of her family can be notified. ?? Hmmmm.

As a servicemember that is defending this country overseas this father shouldn't have to worry about his family being in harms way. This neighborhood has become a serious problem after Katrina, but it has always had a element of crime. After the police department pulled the sub-station out in placed it in the Clearview Mall the crime has increased two fold. The Parish Code Enforcement needs to run a Code Sweep through the neighborhood to get ride of the blight and start tearing down some of these crime infested buildings that attract this type of crime. Also maybe the parish should do like it did on Eisenhower Ave where they broought the property and tear them down in expand the park so that the children of the community will have a safe place to go without having to deal with the crime. Jesse Owens playgrounds sits right in the middle of this blight and crime. To change the community for the young get rid of the blighted apartments that are killing the neighborhood.
