NEW ORLEANS -- An aggravated rapist from New Orleans and a convicted killer from Lafayette escaped from Angola Prison Sunday morning for about two hours.

Melvin Johnson, 49, and Aaron Francois, 24, are both serving life sentences. Johnson is the former New Orleans resident.

Officials say they cut an inner fence and used clothes to cover an outer fence so they wouldn't cut themselves on the razor wire.

One of them did cut himself and had to have staples put in his leg to close the wound.

West Feliciana Sheriff Austin Daniel said the inmates had several bags of peanuts, some pepper to deter police dogs and about 30 garbage bags that he believes they were planning to use as a floatation device.
