NEW ORLEANS -- A local teen is in critical condition after a shooting at the corner of Esplanade Avenue at N. Broad Street.
Police say it all began with an altercation between several students wearing school uniforms, and then gunfire erupted.
With crime scene tape surrounding two lanes of N. Broad Street, investigators combed the parking lot of a business, where several shell casings lie scattered across the ground.
Witnesses reported there were numerous students in the area at the time of the shooting that left one student critically injured, suffering from two gunshot wounds.
Officers recovered a gun at the scene, and took one female student into custody.
Police haven't confirmed whether the students attend nearby John McDonogh High School.
"We don't know what actually stemmed it or what it came from, but we're still doing the best investigation we can possibly do,” said NOPD spokesman Officer Frank Robertson. "We don't know how many shooters there were, but from what the witnesses were saying that there was no return shots fired."
For now, this shooting that happened near a very busy intersection remains under investigation.
