NEW ORLEANS – The controversy over who actually owns the phrase “Who Dat” is resurfacing.

Several merchants in the city say they've received new cease-and-desist letters, threatening action if they don't stop selling Who Dat merchandise.

Leading up to the Saints appearance in the Super Bowl, shops in the city were instructed to stop selling "Who Dat" gear by the NFL. But league officials backed off their threats.

Now, shop owners say Sal and Steve Monistere claim to own the phrase, and are threatening action. The Monisteres say they created Who Dat? Inc. and trademarked the phrase "Who Dat?" in 1983. That year Steve Monistere produced the song and video of "Who Dat Say They Gonna Beat Dem Saints" with Aaron Neville and several Saints players.

You can see that video here.

We talked with one merchant, who says she isn't sure yet how she'll respond.
