The St. Joseph altar at St. Francis Xavier Church on Metairie Road is one of the largest in the area. Like at other altars, volunteers have spent weeks baking the cakes and cookies and cooking and donating the other foods on the altar.

On Tuesday, for the feast day of St. Joseph, local Italian-Americans and Catholics honor the saint with St. Joseph altars.  Volunteers spend weeks erecting elaborate altars of foods and baked goods, all to show devotion to St. Joseph, the patron saint of families, workers and of Sicilians, who began the custom many centuries ago and brought it to New Orleans.
