Robert, La.-- State Police arrested a man in a fatal hit-and-run crash in Tangipahoa Parish, according to Trooper Nick Manale, a spokesman for State Police.
Earl Swaggerty, 26, of Ponchatoula, was arrested and charged with felony hit and run driving.
The crash occurred around 8:30 p.m. Sunday, May 26 on LA 445, a mille north of Interstate-12, Manale said.
Chaz Brumfield, 33, of Robert, was headed south on LA 445 on a moped with no headlight or taillight. "(A)n unknown vehicle approached from the rear and struck the scooter ejecting Brumfield onto the roadway. Upon coming to rest in the center of the highway, Brumfield was struck both by a northbound 2011 International 18 wheeler and a 2007 Toyota Camry as he lay across the roadway," Manale said.
Swaggerty fled the scene after the incident, according to State Police.
Brumfield was pronounced dead on the scene, according to police. "Troopers suspect Brumfield to have been impaired at the time of the crash with a toxicology analysis to be conducted at the Louisiana State Police Crime Lab," Manale said.
